Elgin, SC (April 21, 2007)… Nathan Smith (Santa Cruz, CA) fired a five-under par 67 in the final round of the Capitol Chevrolet Classic over the 7002 yard, par 72 Woodcreek Farms Golf Club to capture his first career Hooters Tour title and two in a row for Duke grads.“Yeah, I got used to the greens after the first two holes on Thursday and I just got it done the rest of the week,” said the twenty-three year old Smith. “The course was really conducive to my game off the tee and I made some putts with none being any bigger than the par putt on 18.”
Smith fired rounds of 71-67-65-67 for a four day total of eighteen-under par 270 and a one stroke victory over Kris Blanks (Bluffton, SC). Blanks tied the low round of the day with a seven-under par 65 for a four day total of seventeen-under par 271.
“It was really fun out there today, I grew up playing juniors with Travis (Bertoni) and I knew Brent from ACC golf,” said Smith. “It was nice to see how I could handle the pressure today coming down the stretch.”
Third Round leader Kevin Kisner (Aiken, SC) closed with a one-under par 71 and finished tied for third with Nick Gilliam (Gainesville, FL) and Travis Bertoni (Pasa Robles, CA) at sixteen-under par 272.
Smith collects a career best $34,741 for his first career win, while Blanks takes home $17,323 for a second runner-up finish of the season. With the win, Smith moves to third on the money list behind fellow Duke grad Kevin Streelman and Brandon Brown.
“This win goes out to Coach Myers, I felt him with me today and I just knew I could do it. I talked with my former teammates last night and they are at the ACC tournament today and I think they gave me as much inspiration today as I tried to give them.”
The Hooters Tour heads west on I-20 to McCormick County and Monticello Golf Club for The 2007 Savannah Lakes Resort Classic next week.
