Final Round Updates: Thompson earns career-best finish; Kokrak grabs 2nd NWT win-

PGA Tour: Michael Thompson, the 2010 NGA Pro Golf Tour Player of the Year, picked up a career-best third-place finish in the McGladrey Classic on Sunday afternoon.

Thompson, who racked up six top-10 finishes, four top-5 showings and his first win on the NGA Pro Golf Tour in 2010, started the day with the lead and ran off three birdies in his first six holes to extend the lead. Unfortunately, a pair of bogeys on the backside left Thompson one shot out of the playoff between Web Simpson and eventual winner Ben Crane.

Despite not winning, Thompson, who finished fourth earlier this season on the PGA Tour, moved inside the top 100 in earnings on the PGA Tour, assuring the former Alabama golfer his PGA Tour card in 2012.

Alums Scott McCarron and Kevin Streelman finished 10-under par and T6, while past players Jim Furyk and Kris Blanks finished T11 at 9-under par.

Alums Heath Slocum, Lucas Glover, David Mathis and Sean O’Hair finished at 8-under par and T15. Past players Jerry Kelly and Michael Bradley finished T20 at 7-under par.

Alums Roger Tambellini and Matt Every finished T3 at 11-under par, while current NGA Pro Golf Tour member Diego Velasquez used a 3-under par 68 to move into a tie for sixth at 10-under par. With the top-10 finish, Velasquez will earn another start on the Nationwide Tour. Alum Darron Stiles also finished T6, while 2010 member Rob Oppenheim finished T9.

Alums Martin Flores, Craig Bowden and John Kimbell finished 8-under par and T12. Current members Andrew Loupe and Matt Hendrix finished 7-under par and tied for 18th with alums Garth Mulroy and Justin Bolli.

Second Round Updates: Members Hendrix, Loupe Top 20 in NW action-

PGA Tour: Michael Thompson, the 2010 NGA Pro Golf Tour Player of the Year, fired his second 65 in as many days in the McGladrey Classic to move into a tie for second.

Thompson, who racked up six top-10 finishes, four top-5 showings and his first win on the NGA Pro Golf Tour in 2010, got off to a rough start in the second round, carding two bogeys in his first four holes on Friday.

However, the former University of Alabama golfer roared back, playing his final five holes of the outward nine in 4-under par. Thompson added three more birdies on the backside and held the clubhouse lead until Billy Horschel played his final four holes 4-under par to take the lead. Thompson will start the weekend T2 at 10-under par and two shots behind Horschel.

Alums Scott McCarron, Jerry Kelly, Jim Furyk, Kris Blanks and Boo Weekley will also be in contention over the weekend. The past NGA Pro Golf Tour players are 5-under par and T8 after two rounds.

Nationwide Tour: Former NGA Pro Golf Tour player Jason Kokrak fired an 8-under 63 in the opening round of the Miccosukee Championship to grab a share of the first round lead.

Kokrak, who played on the NGA Pro Golf Tour in 2009, went bogey-free and had nine birdies in the opening round, putting himself in good position to collect his second win of the season and the 11th by NGA Pro Golf Tour alums on the No. 2 Tour this season.

Current NGA Pro Golf Tour member Diego Velasquez, one of four members to MQ into the event, got off to a hot start as well. The former Oklahoma State standout carded a 6-under 65 in the first round and will start the second round T3. Current Members Vargas, Villegas, Velasquez and Blaum MQ into NWT event-

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - October 12, 2011 - Current NGA Pro Golf Tour members James Vargas, Manuel Villegas, Diego Velasquez and Ryan Blaum were all able to safely navigate the Monday qualifier to earn spots in the Nationwide Tour’s Miccosukee Championship in Miami, Fla.

Vargas, a 2011 NGA Pro Golf Tour winner, shot a 64 on the Plantation Preserve Golf Course on Monday to share medalist honors and earn his seventh start on the Nationwide Tour.

Villegas also played the PPGC, but the former NGA Pro Golf Tour winner had to battle a little harder for his spot in the field. Villegas, the younger brother of PGA Tour star Camilo Villegas, fired a 66 and was the last player to qualify from the site.

Blaum, a three-time winner on the NGA Pro Golf Tour, fired a 66 at Jacaranda Country Club to finish T3 and earned a spot in the field. Blaum, who won the 2011 Kandy Waters Memorial Classic, will be making his 16th Nationwide Tour start. Velasquez, a rookie on the NGA Pro Golf Tour, shot a 67 to make the field by one stroke.

The group will be looking to continue the unprecedented success by NGA Pro Golf Tour members on the No. 2 Tour. Since the start of the season, seven NGA Pro Golf Tour players have earned full-time status on the Nationwide Tour and amassed three victories. In addition, four are in “The 25.”

The past success and the fact 10 fellow members and over 70 alums have made the trip to Miami, Fla., for the event should elevate the confidence of the foursome at the Miccosukee Golf and Country Club this week.

While the Monday qualifiers will be looking to finish high enough to earn another Nationwide Tour start, just as member Andrew Loupe did last week, member Ted Potter Jr. will be gunning for his third victory of the year on the Nationwide Tour, which could lead to his first PGA Tour start.

Potter, a two-time winner in 2011 on the NGA Pro Golf Tour, can earn a “battlefield promotion” to the PGA Tour with a win this week and is ranked No. 3 in the PGATour.com’s Power Rankings for the event. However, even with a decent outing, Potter could move into second on the money standings.

Current members Russell Knox (10th), Billy Hurley III (22nd) and Josh Broadaway (23rd) are also in the field this week, looking to up their standings in The 25. At season’s end, the top 25 will receive PGA Tour cards for 2012.

In 2011, NGA Pro Golf Tour members and alums have combined to win 10 times on the Nationwide Tour.

On the PGA Tour, NGA Pro Golf Tour alums have won 16 times this season. According to the PGATour.com’s Power Rankings, alum David Toms might be the best chance for No. 17.

Toms, who played on the NGA Pro Golf Tour from 1989-91, finished third last season in the McGladrey Classic and enters the event on the heels of T10 and T16 finishes.

NGA Pro Golf Tour alum Heath Slocum, who played on the NGA Pro Golf Tour from 1998-99, won the event last season. Slocum had round of 66-66-66-68 to edge 2012 FedExCup champion Bill Haas by one stroke and Toms by two.

Michael Thompson, the 2010 NGA Pro Golf Tour Player of the Year, will be looking to lock up his PGA Tour card for 2012. Thompson enters the event 115th on the money list and has made the cut in nine of his last 11 events.

Fellow 2010 members Jim Renner and Ben Martin will also be competing this week. Fueled by a third-round 62, Renner, a 2010 NGA Pro Golf Tour winner, finished T24 last week in the Frys.com Open.
