North Augusta, SC (September 5, 2010)… Former Auburn golfer Lee Williams of Alexander City, Alabama closed with a five-under par 67 in the final round of The Kandy Waters Memorial Classic at Mount Vintage Plantation and Golf Club to capture his first career NGA Hooters Tour title.
Former Georgia golfer David Miller (Daphne, AL) is the clubhouse leader through two rounds at thirteen-under par 131. Miller opened with a bogey free six-under par 66 Thursday and backed that up with a tournament low round of seven-under par 65 on Friday.
Williams began the day trailing overnight leaders Matt Anderson (Minneapolis, MN) and Jonathon Hodge (Strawberry Plains, TN) by one stroke but was only able to card a one-under par 35 on the front nine and watched as Anderson’s lead stretched to three strokes with nine holes to play.
"I looked at the leaderboard when we made the turn and saw I was 3 back,” said the twenty-nine year old Williams. “I knew I needed to get something going on the back nine."
Getting something going is exactly what Williams did once he made the turn. The former Walker Cup member added birdies on holes 12, 14 and 16 to enter
the seventy-second hole tied with Anderson at 17-under par.
Williams found the fairway with his drive and left himself 178 yards from the green, needing a birdie to move one ahead. After finding the green with a six iron he calmly knocked in a twelve footer for a four-under par 32 on the back nine and final round 67.
"I looked at the leaderboard while walking up to 18 green and saw Matt
(Anderson) and I were tied. I knew I had to make birdie if I wanted to win, luckily I was able to leave it in a good spot and make it."
For the week, Williams carded rounds of 68-69-66-67 for a four day total of eighteen-under par 270 and a one stroke victory over Anderson. Anderson started off hot on Sunday with three birdies over his first nine holes to get to 17-under par but managed an even par 36 on the back nine for three-under par 69. Anderson joined Williams as the only players in the field to fire all rounds in the 60’s.
With his first place finish on Sunday Williams takes home $30,000 and moves to 22nd on the season long money list with $41,901 in earnings. Anderson takes home $15,945 for his first runner-up finish of the season.
"A special thanks goes to my instructor, Scott Hamilton, for helping me so much with my golf swing and a thank you to my family and my sponsors for their support," said Williams after his win on Sunday.
Longwood, Florida’s Jeff Corr carded a four day total of sixteen-under par 272 and finished alone in third place earning $10,645.
Augusta’s Scott Parel headed up the local players in The Kandy Waters Memorial Classic after he finished in fourth place by himself at fifteen-under par 273. Other local players included North Augusta’s Kyle Bradley (280), Swainsboro’s Will Claxton (280) and Chris Holroyd (288).
The NGA Hooters Tour will head up I-20 next week to the Members Club at Woodcreek and Wildewood for the Woodcreek Classic Sponsored by Woodcreek Development. Actions begins Thursday September 9, 2010 and finishes up on Sunday September 12, 2010.
