NGA Hooters Tour Well Represented At 106th US Open
North Myrtle Beach, SC… Jim Furyk, winner of the 2003 US Open, and Lee Janzen, two-time winner of the US Open (93’ and 98’), are two of fourteen former Hooters Tour players to gain exempt status for the 106th US Open Championship, scheduled from June 15-18 at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, NY.
This impressive list includes 1996 British Open Champion Tom Lehman, 2003 PGA Champion Shaun Micheel, 2003 British Open Champion Ben Curtis, two-time major winner John Daly, Stewart Cink, Zach Johnson, Chad Campbell, Lucas Glover, Sean O’Hair, John Rollins and David Toms.
While these players were exempt from Local and Sectional Qualifying into the Championship based on their PGA performances and world rankings, a group of current and former Hooters Tour members fought through Qualifiers to gain one of the remaining spots.
Former Michigan State men's golfer and current Hooters member John Koskinen (Baraga, Mich.) qualified for the U.S. Open after sharing medalist honors during sectional qualifying in Tampa, Fla., on Tuesday, June 6. Koskinen, needing to place among the top three, tied for first with Florida All-American Billy Horschel with a score of 140. In Atlanta, Georgia at Ansley Golf Club current members Andrew Morse of Chestnut Hills, MA and Alexander City, Alabama’s Lee Williams took two of the four spots to advance to the Open, while Winged Foot regular and current member Andrew Svoboda (Larchmont, NY) advanced in Summit, NJ. Svoboda, who has played more than 150 rounds of golf a year at Winged Foot since he was ten and also won four straight club championships there, will be playing in his first ever PGA Tour event.
In all told, 20 current or former Hooters Tour players will be in the field for the 106th US Open Championship, June 15-18, 2006 at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York.
