April 14-20, 2008
Greenville, NC April 20, 2008…Tour rookie Josh Thompson battled through 2 weather delays including a brief hail storm on his second to last hole of the tournament to close with an even par 72 to win the Touchstone Energy Open by 1 shot over Ted Potter, David Robinson and Brian Stuard. It’s the first professional win for the former University of Alabama-Birmingham Blazer who left school after only two years. Thompson sealed the win and the first place check of $33,565 with a birdie on 17 and a par on 18.
“On 16 tee I knew I was tied with (Brian) Stuard and I told myself I needed to make birdie on 17 and par the rest,” said the 21 year old from Indianapolis, Indiana. “Getting up and down for birdie on 17 was a big relief. I couldn’t wait to hit my tee shot on 18 and get in before more rain came.”
Tour officials were forced to delay the start of the final round of The Touchstone Energy Open by nearly 3 hours due to inclement weather to start the day. Later in the afternoon more rain and lightning forced another stoppage for 1:15, which was followed by a few isolated hail storms as the final groups played their final holes.
Next stop on The Hooters Tour will be in McCormick, South Carolina for the SavannahLakes Resort Classic at Monticello Golf Club with a total purse of $200,000.
